可持续性

365娱乐平台注册的可持续发展 is 一种生活方式. 因为这个, many of the amazing things that regularly transpire here are not applauded as initiatives because they are simply part of the fabric of our daily experience. In other words, “It’s just what we do.”

As I’m just about to start the college process, I’ve been researching various schools 和 campuses. I find myself looking for the same characteristics that I was so lucky to come across at Putney, all of which I had never expected to value as much as I do now!” — Gio的22

From our Net-Zero LEED白金 场的房子 that consumes less energy than it produces, to growing a portion of our own food, to a 可持续性 Squad made up of students with an advisor, sustainability 和 stewardship are integral parts of the Putney experience.

What else would you expect from a school located on a 500-acre working dairy farm in southeastern Vermont?

Every student here is required to spend a semester 在谷仓里工作 before graduation, although many come back for much, much more. Farming, even in this day 和 age is still satisfying 和 confidence-boosting work.

As far as the physical plant is concerned, our current 战略计划 states that “A sustainable campus is both an educational 和 a financial goal.” This commitment is what led to the creation our 场的房子,第一个 LEED白金 school building in the United States.

除了为365bet体育赢得荣誉, which we appreciated but weren’t pursuing, the 场的房子 has been in many publications 和 has hosted visits from other educational institutions, 企业, 和 organizations who want to see how a building of this size can be constructed today, 实惠, 与现有技术. We hope it will serve as an example to everyone planning a new building in the near future.

On a smaller scale, students have designed our latest two-student cabin. 这是super-insulated, 朝向最大的太阳增益, 太阳能, 和 heated with a yacht stove that burns twigs. Students built the cabin from donated insulating panels 和 many found parts.

可持续性 和 ingenuity are just part of who we are.

And, they’re the bedrock of our future. 365bet体育的最新 计划 describes the steps we’re taking to become a 零 campus. Our next step is to upgrade the efficiency of our current buildings while keeping their bucolic appeal.

The 普特尼学校总体规划: Towards a Net Zero Campus

Here is more detailed list of the major sustainability work done on campus over the past five years.

社区文化

The 可持续性 Squad conducted a campus assessment of the school’s recycling program 和 wrote a proposal to replace all of the old recycling 和 waste bins with new, 更易于使用的. The metal bins with liners that are currently used across campus are the result of their work.

总体规划

Two students serve on the 总体规划 committee. 几年前,一个学生犯了一个错误。总体规划学生指南” pamphlet that highlights the most important features students would be interested in knowing about the school’s campus 和 energy goals. Students have also worked on an electric school bus proposal, which resulted in transportation being included in the agenda for the new 总体规划.

环境、社会和治理投资

Students on the 可持续性 Squad were at the heart of the move toward more environmentally 和 socially sound investment practices. This started with a call to divest from fossil fuels in 2013 和 progressed through many conversations with the board of trustees 和 as a community. Working together to align the school’s endowment fund, 信念和投资政策, they triggered a new chapter in Putney’s history.

这所学校 now invests its portfolio using ESG (环境, 社会, 治理)镜头与Glenmede, which has chronicled their journey as they gained real-world investment experience along the way.

“The topic probably would not have come to the table when it did if the students had not been involved,艾米丽·琼斯说, 当时的校长. “Spurred by the students’ interest, the board was engaged in pursuing an impact investing portfolio.”

气候正义会议

2018年4月, students planned 和 hosted a professional level conference on climate justice last spring for New Engl和 residents. Attendees were mostly high school 和 college students. The conference included three workshop blocks, with 20 different workshops facilitated by professionals working in climate change, 种族平等, 食物正义事业. There was also a Justice Fair with educational 和 community booths 和 a catered lunch. Majora Carter, an urban revitalization specialist, was the keynote speaker.

零教育

Students have designed 和 led tours at our 零 field house to highlight the many sustainable features of that unique building. Students have also created videos highlighting some of the features of the field house like: 光伏太阳能, 堆肥厕所,它的 空对空热交换器 还有能量回收系统, as well as videos about new 和 evolving 零 features on other parts of campus, like 新型太阳能电池板.
